The 89th Annual Dept. of GA Convention was held at Dalton, GA on June 22-24, 2007. Cecil Holloway, Ruben Scott, Mo Barnett, Denise Morgan, Jim Nelson, Jim Whelan, Jim Hussey and Arnold Stein attended. The Post History Book and Yearbook took 1st Place. June 26th Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson attended the presentation of the National ALA $21,000.00 to the Active Military Unit. The Legion Family donated $200.00 worth of clothes and books to the VA on June 26th. July 7th Cecil Holloway, Arnold Stein, Denise Morgan, Jim Whelan, Jim Hussey, Jim Nelson and Ruben Scott attended the installation at Post 205 in the afternoon. July 7th that evening they attended the installation at Post 63. On July 9th the Legion Family served 20 veterans from the Resource Group from the VA. They played cards and fished. Then they had lunch. The cost of the outing was $250.00. Jim Nelson, Oral Venable and Arnold Stein attended the event. July 10th Cecil Holloway, Jim Whelan and Denise Morgan attended the installation of Post 94 Sandersville. District Commander Cecil Holloway installed the officers. The Legion Family donated $800.00 worth of clothing to the VA on July 11th. July 13th the Post hosted the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Unit from the VA. They had 35 veterans to attend. The installation of officers for the Post was held on July 14th. They had 120 members of the Legion Family to attend. The new officers installed were Jim Whelan Commander, Cecil Holloway Sr. Vice Commander, Rick Parker 1st Vice Commander, Oral Venable 2nd Vice Commander, Theopelis Knight Adjutant, John Griffin Finance Officer, Robert Kerins Sergeant-at-Arms, Arnold Stein, Jim Nelson and Hal Woods Executive Board, Denise Morgan Chaplain and Arnold Stein Historian. Dept. of GA Adjutant Charlie Knox was the installing officer for the Post. Steve Murray received a Meritorious Service Award from the Commander. Rick Parker received the ''Legionnaire of the Year'' award. Hal Woods received the ''Don Fritz'' award. July 15th Cecil Holloway, Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Denise Morgan, Ruben Scott and Arnold Stein attended the installation of Post 505. District Commander Cecil Holloway was the installing officer. July 21st Jim Whelan, Arnold Stein, Jim Hussey and Denise Morgan attended the installation of Post 194. July 25th the Legion Family hosted the Active Military Unit at the Post for an outing of fishing and lunch. The cost of the event was $295.00. They had 25 to attend. July 26th the Legion Family hosted the monthly bingo at Uptown VA for 65 veterans. They served 65 veterans. The cost of the event was $175.00. July 27th the Legion Family donated $200.00 worth of books to the VA. Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein attended the Awards Program for the Volunteer Teens at the Uptown VA on July 27th. August 7th the Legion Family donated 45 pounds of drink tabs to the Ronald MacDonald House. August 11th the Post held a Horse Shoe and Dart Tournaments. They had 6 teams in the Horse Shoe and 6 teams in the Dart. August 13th the Legion Family hosted the monthly outing for the VA. The cost of the event for the 20 veterans was $275.00. Jim Nelson, Oral Venable post caps. The Legion Family donated $600.00 worth of clothes and books to the VA on August 13th. The Legion Family donated $54.00 for a veteran's airline ticket on August 14th for him to go to the National Creative Arts Festival. The Legion Family held the Juniors and ''Little Sons'' awards banquet on August 18th. They had 102 guests to attend the event. The cost of the event was $425.00. On August 20th the Legion Family donated $300.0 worth of clothes and shoes to the VA. Commander Jim Whelan, Denise Morgan and Jim Hussey attended the National American Legion Convention in Reno, Nevada on August 24th -31st. September 9th Jim Whelan, Cecil Holloway, Arnold Stein, Denise Morgan, Ruben Scott, Theo Knight, Mo Barnett and Jim Nelson attended the District Meeting at Post 63. The Legion Family sponsored the monthly outing at the Post for the Uptown VA Resource Group. The cost of the day was $250.00 for 12 veterans. Oral Venable, Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein volunteered for the event. Columbia County held a 9-11 ceremony on September 11th at the Courthouse on Charlie Norwood Plaza. Kareann Amster, Jim Nelson, Jim Hussey and Arnold Stein attended the event. September 14th Jim Hussey and Arnold Stein attended the POW/MIA ceremony at Fort Gordon. The American Legion Family held a POW/MIA ceremony at the Post on September 14th for the community. They had 25 to attend the ceremony. September 22nd Jim Nelson, Theo Knight, Denise Morgan and Jim Whelan attended the 11th District workshop at Post 205. The Legion Family sponsored the monthly bingo at Uptown VA for 50 veterans. The cost of it was $125.00. Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson volunteered 3 hours to help 25 veterans from Cindy Cooper's Drug and Alcohol Abuse Group at Post on September 27th for a fishing outing with lunch. Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson volunteered at the Fall Festival on October 4th at Uptown VA. The Legion Family had 6 members there. They donated $450.00 in items for 365 veterans. The Legion Family held the annual Fall Carnival on October 21st. They served 139 children from the community and Walton Rehab Disabled Children. The cost of the event was $4536.00. The Columbia County Sheriff Dept. was there to fingerprint children and the Columbia County Fire Dept. was there with fire safety. They had hot dogs, corndogs, chili, French fries, sweet potato fries, cookies, cupcakes, lemonade, juice, popcorn, cotton candy, boil peanuts and lots of candy. They had games, prizes and a dunking booth. They had 63 legion Family members to participate in it. The Uptown VA Blind Unit and the Day Treatment Unit visited the Post on October 22nd for fishing and playing cards. They had 25 veterans to attend the outing and had lunch. The cost was $300.00 for the Legion. Oral Venable, Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson attended the event for the veterans. October 25th Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson represented the Post at Fort Gordon for the quarterly awards program. October 25th the Legion Family held the monthly bingo for 52 veterans. Jim Nelson and Cecil Holloway attended. The cost was $150.00. The Dept. of GA Fall Conference was held at Macon on October 26-28. Jim Whelan, Cecil Holloway, Denise Morgan, Arnold Stein, Jim Nelson, Mo Barnett and Ruben Scott attended the event. Arnold Stein received a plaque for his first place History and Yearbook for 2006-2007. November 3rd the Early Bird dinner was held at the Post. They had 62 to attend it. November 9th Arnold Stein and Jim Nelson attended the Uptown VA for the Veteran's Day Celebration. They handed out ribbons, caps, programs and cards to 175 veterans. November 11th Arnold Stein attended the Biker's Run at Uptown VA for 125 bikers. They served 120 veterans for Veteran's Day. November 12th Arnold Stein and Jim Hussey attended the Veteran's Day events at GA War Nursing Home, Veteran's Parade and the All Wars Monument Celebration. November 13th the Legion Family hosted the lunch outing at the Post for the Blind Unit and the Day Treatment. They served 24 veterans Thanksgiving dinner. The cost was $325.00. The Legion Family had 46 to attend the annual Thanksgiving at the Post on November 22nd. Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein played Santa at the Auxiliary Christmas Gift Shops at Uptown and Downtown VA. They delivered packages to veterans on units. December 5th Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein attended the Volunteer Christmas Reception at Uptown VA. December 6th Arnold Stein, Denise Morgan, Cecil Holloway and Jim Whelan attended the dinner at Post 505 for the Dept. Commander's VA Tour. December 7th Jim Whelan, Denise Morgan and Arnold Stein attended the tour at VA and lunch at Post 63. Post 192 hosted the dinner for the tour. December 8th Jim Nelson, Jim Whelan, Ruben Scott and Arnold Stein attended the GA War Nursing Home tour followed by lunch at Post 192. Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson Cecil Holloway, Ruben Scott and Arnold Stein attended the dinner at Post 205. December 9th Post 178 hosted District meeting. Cecil Holloway, Robert Pollard, Jim Nelson, Jim Whelan, Theo Knight, Arnold Stein, Denise Morgan, Ruben Scott and Jim Hussey attended the meeting. December 10th Post 192 hosted Christmas dinner with Christmas bingo and gifts for 75 veterans. December 16th the Legion Family hosted Christmas party for 46 children. December 20th the Legion Family hosted Christmas meal and gifts for 200 Active Duty Warriors. The VA Medical Center held the Rededication Ceremony on January 15th to rename the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center. Arnold Stein, Jim Hussey, Jim Nelson, Robert Pollard and Jim Whelan attended the event. January 29th Arnold Stein, Jim Hussey, Robert Pollard and Jim Nelson attended the retirement ceremony at Fort Gordon for Jim Whelan. February the 3rd the Post sponsored Rebecca Wilson in the local contest for the Oratorical contest at Post 205. Cecil Holloway, Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein attended. The Post held a ''Super Bowl'' party on February 3rd. They had 83 guests to attend it. February 11th the Legion Family hosted the monthly outing for the Uptown VA veterans. They had 21 veterans to attend. Hal Woods cooked for it. Jim Whelan, Oral Venable, Jim Nelson played pool with them and Arnold Stein played cards with the veterans. The cost of the day was $350.00. February 12th the Legion Family hosted National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans at the Uptown VA. Robert Pollard, Jim Nelson, Jim Whelan and Arnold Stein attended the event. The Legion Family donated $75.00 for it. Arnold Stein, Jim Nelson, Cecil Holloway, Jim Whelan and Jim Hussey attended the 11th District Oratorical contest at Post 205 on February 17th. The Post held a Four Chaplain ceremony at Post on February 22nd. They had 32 members to attend. They had members from Post 194 and 205 to attend. The Legion Family collected over 2000 stuffed animals for the HUG-A-BEAR program on February 29th. March 10th Cecil Holloway, Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Jim Hussey and Denise Morgan attended the District meeting at Post 194. March 11th the Legion Family hosted an outing for lunch and cards for 25 veterans from Uptown VA. The cost of it for the day was $250.00. The Dept. of GA held the Spring Conference at Macon on March 14th thru 16th. Jim Whelan, Cecil Holloway, Denise Morgan, Arnold Stein, Jim Nelson, Ruben Scott and Robert Pollard attended. The Legion Family donated $1000.00 to the Commander's Special Project. The Legion Family donated $300.00 for the ''Little League'' baseball team. The Legion Family sponsored the spring golf tournament on April 20th. They had 144 golfers to participate in it. There were 25 Legionnaires to play in it. The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center held the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service Recognition Ceremony at Fort Gordon Club on April 24th. Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein attended. Jim Nelson received his 300-hour pin and Arnold Stein received his 750-hour pin. The Legion Family collected $4473.12 for the Cancer Relay for Life. April 25th Denise Morgan, Kareann Amster, Hal Woods, Jim Farris, Jim Nelson, Mo Barnett, Ron Mayes, Jeffery Bishop, Arnold Stein, Rick Parker and Zee Brooks walked in the Cancer Relay for Life. May 1st Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein attended the 'Volunteer Appreciation Dinner' at GA War Nursing Home. Arnold Stein, Jim Whelan and Bill Nicholas attended the Boys State dinner at Golden Corral on May 22nd with 5 boys. May 24th Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Cecil Holloway, Arnold Stein, Kareann Amster, Denise Morgan, Jim Hussey and Bill Nicholas participated in the Columbia County Veterans Red, White and Blue Celebration. The Legion Family had a food booth and the Wall of Honor at the celebration. May 25th Cecil Holloway, Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Kareann Amster and Arnold Stein helped at the VA Bikers Run for Memorial Day. Ray Frei and Ed Beckman rode in it. May 25th Jim Nelson and Arnold Stein placed wreaths on veterans graves made by Unit 2B of the Uptown VA. May 26th Denise Morgan Post chaplain was the guest speaker at Sandersville Courthouse. Post 192 members Robert Pollard and Ruben Scott attended the poppy anchor launching at Savannah. Jim Whelan, Steve Eveker, Jim Nelson, Arnold Stein, Kareann Amster and Cecil Holloway attended the GA War Nursing Home Memorial Day Service. They also attended the ''All Wars Monument'' Memorial Day Ceremony. The Post held the awards program on May 31st at the Post. The commander gave out his certificates to his officers. Rick Parker and Bill Rice received ''Meritorious Service Awards''. They had 52 to attend it. He gave ''Appreciation Awards'' to all the Legion Family that cooks for the Legion. Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Arnold Stein, Denise Morgan, Harold Woods, Bill Nicholas, Cecil Holloway, Oral Venable, Ray Frei, Ruben Scott, Anita Fritz, Bob Ross, Bob Kerins, Kareann Amster, Ken Rosier, Jim Farris and John Griffin attended the awards program. The Legion Family provided refreshments after the awards program. June 1st the 11th District meeting was held at Post 178 in Augusta. Mo Barnett received the ''Legionnaire of the Year' from the 11th District Commander Cecil Holloway. Jim Whelan, Jim Nelson, Denise Morgan, Robert Pollard, Arnold Stein, Ruben Scott, Mo Barnett and Cecil Holloway attended. Post 192 Commander Jim Whelan received the Post 100% membership ribbon. Robert Pollard spoke to the general membership on the Dept. of GA Convention being in Augusta in June. The Post will sponsor 5 ''Wounded Warriors'' for the banquet on Saturday night at the convention. June 7th the Post hosted the 11th District Homecoming. They had 72 guests to attend. June 8th Jim Whelan, Cecil Holloway, Arnold Stein, Robert pollard and Jim Nelson saw the boys off for Boys State.
